Last Minute Comicing...

I pulled in to Cincinnati the nite before SPACE to hang out with my friend Leighton, and then we were going to drive up to Columbus in the morning. Leighton had a surprise for me, though...We still had 60 comic books to print and assemble. As if that weren't enough, Friday is the one nite of the week that Kinkos closes "early". Early being 10:00, but when it was already 9:00, that didn't give us much time. There was much gnashing of teeth, recriminations, condolences, encouragement and finally at 10:15, we were finished. The guy running the shop very kindly let us stay a few minutes late to finish folding and stapling the books.

The next morning at breakfast, Leightons four-year-old daughter read the whole book to me, and now no other reading can live up to that one. If you'd like to find a four-year-old of your own to have read it to you, the book can be found serialized online here, on the Monsters Against Robots web page.

The Storm Before the Calm...Or Something

The Week before last, I went out to Columbus, Ohio for the Small Press and Comics Expo, or S.P.A.C.E. It was a great trip, and I got to hang out with my friend Leighton, writer and illustrator of Laser Brigade. I had the best Barbecue ever, thanks to Matt Kish who's illustrated Moby Dick Companion is just incredible. There were so many great artists and comics, and Jeff Smith even stopped in to check the show out.

The weeks leading up to the show were SUPER busy, as I finished up Volume 1 of the Handmade Fairy Tales book, and put together issue 3 of the Life With Girls comic...in case you're wondering where issue 1 and 2 are, I'll be printing them next month. You can pick up both books in my online shop on the Handmade Family website.

Daily Life 006: Long Week

August 31, 2009 - Daily Life 006: Long Week

It's been a long, and very busy week. My wife is pregnant with our second child, and we've begun talking about some of the changes coming up in our lives. I have that feeling, like when you've just moved into a new house and you sit down in a little chair with boxes of your stuff in a place that's not really yours yet. I sit and let out a deep breath, and just feel a little... overwhelmed.

I started keeping track of my life with the girls in 2009, in a series of narrated illustrations called "Daily Life"...As I finish up collecting some of these stories for print books, and catch up on some freelance work, I thought it would be a good time to post some of these older stories, so that everything is collected here on the blog. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. :)

Daily Life 005: Dissapear

August 24, 2009 - Daily Life 005: A Gap In My Afternoon

Every day last year as I passed through one of the neighborhoods on my way from work to pick up Amy and Abby, I would pass this older black gentleman. And every day, he would turn slowly and wave as I passed. It's over two weeks into the school year now, and I haven't seen him at all... It seems odd that I should really miss a person who I never really met. And it kind of makes me sad that that should seem odd at all.

Daily Life 004: New Boots

August 20, 2009 - Daily Life 004: New Boots

Abby got a new pair of boots from her Nana this weekend... She was very excited. We went to the Wal-mart after dinner, and she kept stopping to admire them.

Daily Life 003: My Bike

August 17, 2009 - Daily Life 003: My Bike

"My Bike is now functional again! The plan is to drop me and the bike off at work every day, and then I will ride it in the afternoon to pick up Amy and Abigail. It's like getting back in touch with an old friend."

Daily Life 02: Darth Vader

August 10, 2009 - Daily Life 002: Darth Vader

"Abigail recently discovered her mothers microphone/tape player. She doesn't seem to get that you're supposed to talk into it, so she sticks the whole microphone into her mouth and does a pretty decent Darth Vader impression... Then says UH! really loud."

Daily Life 01: Fifteen Minutes

August 3, 2009 - Daily Life 001: Fifteen Minutes
My favorite part of the day, is the fifteen minutes between bath-time and bed-time when Abby and I just sit on the couch, watch a cartoon, and wind down...

Vote in your local elections today!

I know it's not as exciting as the presidential election and hanging chads, but voting in your local elections in April has much more impact on your daily lives. Your teachers, ambulance drivers, school boards and taxes will thank you.

Well, maybe your TAXES won't thank you, but you might at least want to know what you're paying for, right? The first step to having a better country is having a better community. Please take a couple of minutes and go vote today.
